Montenegro joins the London Agreement: translation requirements simplified from 1 August 2025

The London Agreement is an optional agreement of contracting states of the European Patent Convention aiming at reducing the costs relating to the translation of European patents. The EPC contracting states which have ratified or acceded to the Agreement undertake to waive, entirely or largely, the requirement for translations of European patents. On 1 August 2025, the agreement entered into force for Montenegro as 23rd contracting state. Accordingly, for European patents granted with effect for Montenegro on or after 1 August 2025, no Montenegrin language translation of the European patent specification need be supplied if the patent is granted in English or if an English translation of the patent is supplied. A translation of the claims to Montenegrin language must always be supplied. The new rules do not apply to patents granted before 1 August 2025 that are later amended in opposition, appeal, or limitation proceedings.
